How Social Media Shapes the Way We Wander
Before we even step out the door, we’ve already traveled the world through our screens. One scroll through Instagram and suddenly we’re planning brunch at that minimalist cafe downtown, booking a trip to that beach resort our favorite influencer just posted about, or hunting down that dessert everyone on TikTok can’t stop raving about.
I can’t even count how many times this has happened to me. A friend sent me a post of a newly opened restaurant, and before we even agree on what time to meet, I’m already checking their Facebook page for the menu, reviews, and photos from other customers. After all, no one wants to waste their time (or outfit) on a place that looks good online but disappoints in person.
Social media has become our digital travel buddy, one that’s equal parts helpful and high-maintenance. It tells us where to go, what to order, and which angle gets the best lighting for that photo-worthy moment. But, while it’s fun to let the algorithm guide us, it’s also easy to get lost in the filters, hashtags, and hype.
So, before you let your “For You” page plan your next trip or food crawl, here are a few things I’ve learned from experience about how social media is shaping the way we explore, and how to make it work for you, not against you.
- The Algorithm is the New Tour Guide
Gone are the days of flipping through travel brochures or relying on word of mouth. Now, one viral video can turn a sleepy cafe into the next must-see destination. The thing is, the algorithm doesn’t care about your vibe; it just wants your attention. So before you let TikTok convince you to book that “hidden paradise,” dig a little deeper. Check if it’s actually accessible, affordable, and open year-round. Not every spot looks as dreamy IRL as it does with a filter and a drone shot.
- Reviews Are Gold, But Read Between the Lines
Social media reviews are our modern-day compass. When I hear about a newly opened bar or cafe, my first instinct is to stalk their tag feed. Photos don’t lie (well, not completely). You can tell right away if the place looks cozy or chaotic.
But here’s my rule: never trust just one review. Balance the raves and the rants. Sometimes, a “bad experience” post just means the person was hangry.
- The “Instagrammable” Trap
We all want that perfect picture. I once picked a restaurant solely because of its dreamy fairy lights and neon signs. The food? Meh. The photo? Gorgeous.
It’s okay to be drawn to pretty aesthetics, but don’t let it be the only reason you go. Some of the best spots I’ve discovered were the least “post-worthy” but the most soul-filling.
- Let Social Media Inspire You, Not Pressure You
Scrolling through travel content can make you feel like you’re missing out if you’re not sipping matcha in Japan or lounging in Bali. But remember, travel isn’t a competition, it’s a connection. Whether you’re discovering a hidden cafe in your town or watching a sunset from your own porch, what matters is how it makes you feel, not how it looks online.
